Many of these people are gap year students, students who have time before joining a university or students who are about to graduate. Typically, these people visit several countries on their trip to see exotic places. Since backpackers are generally less affluent than regular travellers, they often choose to visit countries of lower economic status and with lower levels of hygiene and healthcare than found in the UK.Since these travellers often have shoestring budgets, they tend to give little thought to insuring their travel. They often overlook expenses for medical emergencies before going abroad and underestimate consequences arising out of untoward incidents while on holiday. Travelling on a budget puts backpackers at a high risk for accidents and injuries. For instance, trekking in Thailand or scuba diving at an exotic location increases one's vulnerability. Exploring off the beaten tracks, travelling overnight, camping or sleeping in dorms makes you susceptible to illness or crime.  For your safety while on the road, a backpacker travel insurance policy is essential before leaving the country. Backpacker travel insurance covers an individual for an entire 12 months spent outside the UK. However, policies and costs differ widely. A survey by the Foreign Office found that people who had problems while abroad could have averted the problems if they were better prepared. Further, the survey mentioned that nearly a third of British people who travel independently face some major problem while abroad such as having an illness, missing flights or becoming crime victims. The younger travellers are twice likely to get into some sort of unpleasant situation.  Backpack travel insurance is a necessity, and without insurance, you could be faced with medical bills and repatriation expenses worth thousands of pounds. Backpacker policies are effective and cheaper alternatives to other policies. Many of the policies offer a number of features and a wide variety of extras such as protection during sporting activities. The policies allow you to return home in the middle of your trip if necessary. Check your backpacker policy's wording to make sure that the activity you intend to perform is covered.
