Activity Travel Insurance

Leisure time activities while travelling sometimes fall under the umbrella of Adventure Travel. This can refer to wild or exciting sports activities, but it can also include such things as getting off the beaten path to see or experience something that the typical tourist probably will never encounter.

Adventure travel may be done overseas at some more exotic locale. However, it can also be done in the homeland and at any time of the year. Sometimes such travel is not even planned for ahead of time. Some spur-of-the-moment idea may suddenly change your travel plans for an afternoon. Perhaps you see a billboard advertising someplace that you have never heard of before and decide haphazardly to visit the place. Adventure travel insurance covers such unplanned travel excitement.

Activity Travel Insurance

Extreme sports and extreme activities may not present themselves to your adventurous mind as dangerous. How often does someone have a serious accident while exploring a cave or while visiting a deserted beach to explore the reef? Such accidents are seldom heard of. However, if they happen, adventure travel insurance must be available to help with the costs and planning for resulting actions that need to be taken.

One may think that his normal travel insurance plan will suffice should an unforeseen event occur while on holiday or while travelling. Standard travel insurance is not designed for the costs of activities which are considered dangerous. Standard travel insurance is designed for more normal activities involved in travel, not high-risk activities.

In the UK, according to AXA Insurance, one in six people who participate in adventure activities while on holidays do not purchase adventure travel insurance. It is recommended that travellers going to remote locations or exotic countries have an insurance policy with a strong healthcare component. In case one breaks a leg while hiking in the Andes, for example, certain policies cover the cost for airlift to health care facilities. Medical treatments can run into thousands of pounds.

Activity Travel Insurance

Insurance need not be expensive. As well, it will protect if one encounters problems on holiday, minimizing costs and disruption of activities. The small cost of insurance is well worth it should an expensive disaster occur to the traveller while on holiday.

Consider the sports with medium risk activities. They include American football, archery, ballooning, bouldering, bunjee jumping, expeditions and trekking, soccer, glacier crossing, gliding, hang gliding, high diving from platforms, hockey, horse riding, jet skiing, marathon/ triathlon, martial arts, microlighting, parachuting, paragliding, parascending, potholing/caving, power boating even as a passenger, rock climbing, rugby, scrambling, show jumping, sky diving, water skiing, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking and yachting. Any holiday which includes any of these activities should be accompanied by adventure travel insurance.

Since insurance for adventure travel is recommended for the above activities, how much more is it needed for the high-risk activities such as canyoning, motor rallying, mountaineering, over-landing, piloting an aircraft, polo, scuba diving deeper than 30 meters, speed skating, white water rafting at level 5, or yachting out of territorial waters.
